“I certainly know people from my Ummah who will come on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds like the white mountains of Tihamah. Yet Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, will turn those deeds into scattered dust.”
Thawban (RA) asked:
“O Messenger of Allah! Describe them to us and explain their characteristics clearly, so that we do not unknowingly become among them.”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“Indeed, they are your brothers and belong to your own people. They perform acts of worship during the night just as you do. However, they are people who, when they are alone and away from others, violate the sacred limits set by Allah.”
Reported by Ibn Majah, Al-Tabarani, Al-Ruyani.
Abstaining from sins while performing a few voluntary acts of worship is better than performing an abundance of voluntary acts of worship, because abstaining from sins is an obligatory duty, whereas voluntary acts of worship are recommended.
Al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab (RA) said in Jāmiʿ al-ʿUlūm wa al-Ḥikam:
Regarding the saying of the Prophet ﷺ:
“When I forbid you from something, then avoid it; and when I command you to do something, then do as much of it as you are able.”
Some scholars said:
“This indicates that prohibitions are more serious than commands, because no concession was given to commit any part of what has been prohibited, whereas commands were restricted according to one's ability."
This was also narrated from Imam Ahmad (RA).
This resembles the saying of some scholars:
“Acts of righteousness are performed by both the righteous and the wicked; but as for sins, none abstains from them except a ṣiddīq (a person of exceptional truthfulness and sincerity).”
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (RA), that the Prophet ﷺ said to him:
“Avoid the forbidden things, and you will be the most devoted of people in worship.”
Aishah (RA) said:
“Whoever wishes to surpass the one who constantly strives hard in worship, let him refrain from sins. [For you will never meet Allah with anything better for you than having few sins.]”
[Reported by Ibn al-Mubarak in Al-Zuhd]
It was also narrated from her as a narration attributed to the Prophet ﷺ.
[Reported by Ibn Abi al-Dunya, Abu Ya‘la, and al-Khara’iti]
Al-Hasan Al Basari (RA) said:
“The worshippers have not worshipped Allah with anything better than abandoning what Allah has forbidden them from.”
Apparently, what has been reported regarding the superiority of abandoning prohibited acts over performing acts of obedience is intended to refer only to voluntary acts of obedience.
Otherwise, the category of obligatory deeds is superior to the category of abstaining from prohibited acts, because deeds are intended in themselves, whereas prohibited acts are things whose absence is sought. Therefore, abstaining from them does not require an intention, unlike performing deeds.
This is supported by the statement of Ibn Umar (RA):
“Returning a single dāniq (a small unit of money) that is unlawful is better than giving one hundred thousand (units of money) in charity in the cause of Allah.”
And it was narrated from some of the Salaf (early righteous predecessors) that they said:
“Abandoning even a single dāniq (a small unit of money) of something that Allah dislikes is more beloved to Allah than performing five hundred Hajj pilgrimages.”
Maymūn ibn Mihrān (RA) said:
“Remembering Allah with the tongue is good, but better than that is for a servant to remember Allah when faced with an opportunity to commit a sin, and therefore refrain from committing it.”
Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz (RA) said:
“Piety (Taqwa) is not merely standing in prayer during the night, fasting during the day, and engaging in a mixture of deeds in between. Rather, Taqwa is fulfilling what Allah has made obligatory and abandoning what He has forbidden. If, in addition to that, one performs further good deeds, then that is goodness upon goodness.”

The summary of their statements
indicates that avoiding prohibited acts, even if they are few, is better than performing an abundance of voluntary acts of worship, because the former is obligatory, whereas the latter is voluntary. (This concludes the quotation from Imam Ibn Rajab (RA).)
