இஸ்லாமிய அடையாளத்துடன் பெயர் சூட்டுவோம். Islamic Guidance on Naming Children.

Islam provides clear, beautiful guidance regarding the naming of children.

Naming a child is an act of worship (ʿibādah).

Generally, people want to do everything beautifully. This principle should also be observed when choosing names for their children. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that Allah loves beauty.

The following is an English translation of the article, including its Qur’anic verses, hadiths, explanations, and references.

### 1\. The importance of choosing a beautiful name

### Hadith 1: Allah loves beauty

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ جَمِيلٌ يُحِبُّ الْجَمَالَ

Abdullah ibn Masʿud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Indeed, Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty.”

Reference: Sahih Muslim, 147.

### Hadith 2: You will be called by your names on the Day of Resurrection

عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ رضي الله عنه قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِنَّكُمْ تُدْعَوْنَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِأَسْمَائِكُمْ وَأَسْمَاءِ آبَائِكُمْ فَحَسِّنُوا أَسْمَاءَكُمْ

Abu al-Dardaʾ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and the names of your fathers. Therefore, choose good names for yourselves.”

Reference: Musnad Ahmad, 20704. The authenticity of this particular narration has been discussed by hadith scholars.

### Hadith 3: The rights of children

It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Among the rights of a child upon his father are three things:

* To give the child a good name.

* To teach the child the Qur’an when the child is able to distinguish and understand.

* To arrange the child’s marriage when the child reaches the appropriate age.”

Reference: Al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir.

Note: This narration's authenticity should be verified before quoting it as an established statement of the Prophet.

### 2\. The best names to choose

### The most beloved names to Allah

عَنْ أَبِي وَهْبٍ الْجُشَمِيِّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم تَسَمَّوْا بِأَسْمَاءِ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ وَأَحَبُّ الْأَسْمَاءِ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Name yourselves after the Prophets. The names most beloved to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman.”

* Abdullah (عبد الله): Servant of Allah.

* Abdur-Rahman (عبد الرحمن): Servant of the Most Merciful.

Reference: Musnad Ahmad. A similar narration is recorded in Sahih Muslim, 2132.

### The Prophet named his son Ibrahim

Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“A boy was born to me last night, and I named him after my father, Ibrahim.”

Reference: Sahih Muslim.

### The Prophet named Abu Musa's son Ibrahim

Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:

“A boy was born to me, and I brought him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He named him Ibrahim, rubbed a chewed date inside the child's mouth, supplicated for blessings for him, and then returned him to me. He was Abu Musa's eldest son.”

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari.

### The Prophet named a child Yusuf

Yusuf ibn Abdullah ibn Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:

“The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) named me Yusuf, seated me on his lap, and stroked my head.”

Reference: Musnad Ahmad, 15809.

### Naming children Muhammad

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Give names after my name, but do not use my kunyah (agnomen).”

A kunyah is a traditional Arabic form of address, such as Abu al-Qasim.

Reference: Sahih Muslim.

### Recommended names

It is recommended to consider names associated with:

* The Prophets (peace be upon them).

* The Companions of the Prophet.

* Righteous and pious people.

* Martyrs (shuhada).

* People known for good character and devotion to Allah.

However, the meaning of the name must also be considered.

Names associated with polytheism, objectionable meanings, or inappropriate claims of divine status should be avoided.

### 3\. Names that are forbidden

### Names that belong exclusively to Allah

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“The most despicable name in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be that of a man who calls himself Malik al-Amlak (King of Kings).”

References: Sahih al-Bukhari, 2606; Sahih Muslim.

A name that claims a status exclusive to Allah is prohibited.

Examples of divine names that should not be used independently as human names include:

* Allah — الله

* Ar-Rahman — الرحمن, the Most Merciful

* Al-Khaliq — الخالق, the Creator

* Al-Quddus — القدوس, the Most Holy

* Al-Ahad — الأحد, the One

* As-Samad — الصمد, the Eternal Refuge

* Al-Hakam — الحكم, the Ultimate Judge

* Ar-Razzaq — الرزاق, the Provider

* Al-Jabbar — الجبار, the Compeller

* Al-Mutakabbir — المتكبر, the Supremely Great

* Al-Awwal — الأول, the First

* Al-Akhir — الآخر, the Last

* Al-Batin — الباطن, the Most Hidden

* Allam al-Ghuyub — علام الغيوب, the Knower of the Unseen.

These names should not be given to people in a form that claims Allah's exclusive attributes. Many can be used with the prefix Abd, meaning “servant of,” such as Abdullah and Abdul-Khaliq.

Reference: Ibn al-Qayyim, Tuhfat al-Mawdud.

### The name Abu al-Hakam

Haniʾ al-Harithi (may Allah be pleased with him) was known among his people as Abu al-Hakam, meaning “Father of Wisdom” or “Father of Judgement.”

When he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet asked him:

“Allah is the Judge, and judgement belongs to Him. Why, then, are you called Abu al-Hakam?”

Haniʾ replied that when his people disagreed about something, they came to him for a judgement, and both sides were satisfied with his decision.

The Prophet acknowledged that this was a good thing and asked him about his children. After learning that his eldest son was named Shurayh, the Prophet told him to use the kunyah Abu Shurayh instead.

Reference: Sunan Abi Dawud and Sunan al-Nasa'i; the narration is also recorded in hadith collections dealing with manners.

The lesson is that a name or title should not improperly claim an attribute or authority that belongs exclusively to Allah.

### Changing an inappropriate name to a good one

It is narrated that a man's name during the pre-Islamic period was Aziz. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed his name to Abdur-Rahman.

Reference: Musnad Ahmad, 16944.

Another narration reports that when the family of Umm Salamah named a child Walid, the Prophet expressed disapproval and spoke about a person who would later be called Walid and cause great harm to the Muslim community.

Reference: Musnad Ahmad.

The historical context of this narration should be considered carefully; it should not be understood as a blanket prohibition against everyone named Walid.

### Changing the name Asram

Usamah ibn Akhdari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man named Asram came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

The Prophet asked him his name. When the man replied, “Asram,” the Prophet changed it to “Zurʿah.”

Reference: Sunan Abi Dawud.

The lesson drawn from this narration is that names with undesirable meanings may appropriately be changed to names with better meanings.

### Changing the name Asiyah to Jamilah

Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:

“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed the name of a woman called Asiyah and said, ‘You are Jamilah.’”

* Jamilah (جميلة): Beautiful.

* Asiyah (عاصية): In this particular Arabic spelling, it means a disobedient woman.

References: Sahih Muslim; Al-Adab al-Mufrad; Musnad Ahmad.

It is important to distinguish between Arabic spellings. The name Asiyah may be written and pronounced differently, and its meaning depends on the Arabic spelling intended. The name of Asiyah, the wife of Pharaoh who believed in Allah, is widely used among Muslims and should not be confused automatically with the Arabic word for disobedience.

### 4\. Certain names that the Prophet discouraged

Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited certain names, including:

* Yasar (يسار): Ease or prosperity.

* Rabah (رباح): Profit or gain.

* Najah (نجاح): Success.

* Aflah (أفلح): More successful or prosperous.

A related narration in Sahih Muslim mentions the names Yasar, Rabah, Najih and Aflah.

Reference: Sahih Muslim, 2138 in commonly used numbering; numbering varies by edition.

The concern described in the hadith is that when someone asks about a person with such a name, an awkward or undesirable response might result. These names are not necessarily forbidden in the same way as names that claim divine attributes; scholars distinguish between discouraged names and prohibited names.

### The name Barrah was changed to Zaynab

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:

“Zaynab was previously named Barrah. It was said that she was praising and declaring herself pure. Therefore, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) named her Zaynab.”

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari, 6192; Sahih Muslim.

The lesson is that names that imply self-praise, exaggerated purity or self-righteousness are better avoided.

### 5\. Do names determine a person's character or destiny?

The article gives examples of names and their meanings and compares them with the later experiences of the people who bore those names.

### The name Hazn

Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib reported from his grandfather that his grandfather came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

The Prophet asked, “What is your name?”

He replied, “Hazn.”

The Prophet said, “You are Sahl.”

* Hazn (حَزْن): Roughness, harshness or difficult terrain.

* Sahl (سَهْل): Ease, gentleness or level terrain.

The man replied that he would not change the name his father had given him.

Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib later remarked that harshness continued to be found among his family.

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari, 6190.

### The names of those who fought at Badr

The article also compares the names of six men who fought in single combat at the Battle of Badr.

Among the Quraysh were:

* Shaybah

* Utbah

* Walid

The article associates their names with weakness or hardship.

On the Muslim side were:

* Ali: Highness or elevation.

* Ubaydah: A diminutive form related to servanthood.

* Harith: One who cultivates or works.

The article interprets these meanings symbolically in relation to the events of Badr.

However, such comparisons should not be treated as proof that a person's name determines their personality, future or fate. In Islam, names with good meanings are encouraged, but a name does not independently control a person's destiny.

### 6\. The Prophet appreciated good names

It is reported from Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not practise superstitious omens. However, he appreciated good names and expressions of optimism.

When he sent an official to perform a task, he would ask about the person's name. If he liked the name, happiness could be seen on his face. If he disliked the name, displeasure could be seen on his face.

Reference: Sunan Abi Dawud; related narrations discuss the Prophet's appreciation of good names and optimism.

### The incident involving Buraydah during the Hijrah

When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) migrated from Makkah to Madinah with Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), the Quraysh had offered a reward of one hundred camels to anyone who captured the Prophet and returned him to them.

Buraydah al-Aslami was travelling with a group of approximately seventy horsemen from his family when he encountered the Prophet and Abu Bakr.

The Prophet asked him, “Who are you?”

He replied, “Buraydah.”

The Prophet turned to Abu Bakr and said words to the effect of:

“Our affair has become cool and settled.”

The article interprets this as optimism associated with Buraydah's name, which it connects with coolness and relief.

The Prophet then asked Buraydah about his tribal affiliation. He replied that he belonged to the tribe of Aslam. The Prophet expressed optimism from the meaning associated with this name as well.

When asked about his family, Buraydah replied that he belonged to Banu Sahm. The Prophet again made a remark drawing on the meaning of the name Sahm, which is associated with an arrow.

Buraydah then asked the Prophet who he was. The Prophet replied:

“I am Muhammad ibn Abdullah, the Messenger of Allah.”

Buraydah declared the testimony of faith and embraced Islam. Those accompanying him also accepted Islam.

References: Ibn al-Athir, Usud al-Ghabah; Ibn al-Jawzi, Al-Wafa bi Taʿrif Fada'il al-Mustafa.

This story illustrates the appreciation of good meanings and optimism, not a belief in superstition or the idea that names independently determine events.

### The man named Murrah and the man named Yaʿish

A narration in al-Tabarani's Al-Muʿjam reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once asked who would milk his camel.

One man volunteered. When asked his name, he replied, “Murrah.” The Prophet told him to sit down.

A second man volunteered, also giving the name “Murrah,” and was likewise told to sit down.

A third man came forward and gave his name as “Jamrah.” The Prophet also told him to sit down.

Finally, Yaʿish volunteered. When asked his name, he replied, “Yaʿish.”

The Prophet told him to milk the camel.

* Murrah (مُرَّة): Bitter.

* Jamrah (جَمْرَة): An ember or a burning coal.

* Yaʿish (يعيش): He lives or may he live.

Reference: Al-Tabarani, Al-Muʿjam al-Kabir, 16/143.

This narration is presented as another example of the Prophet's appreciation of favourable meanings. Its authenticity should be assessed before using it as a definitive legal ruling.

### The name Sahl at Hudaybiyyah

Before the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah was concluded, Quraysh sent Suhayl ibn Amr to negotiate with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

When the Prophet saw him, he said words to the effect of:

“Your affair has become easy for you.”

The expression was connected with the name Suhayl, which is related to ease.

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari.

The incident is an example of optimism through a favourable expression, rather than belief in omens.

### 7\. When should a child be named?

### The Qur'anic example of Maryam

Allah says in the Qur'an:

فَلَمَّا وَضَعَتْهَا قَالَتْ رَبِّ إِنِّي وَضَعْتُهَا أُنْثَى ... وَإِنِّي سَمَّيْتُهَا مَرْيَمَ

“When she delivered her, she said, ‘My Lord, I have delivered a female child’ ... ‘I have named her Maryam, and I seek Your protection for her and her offspring from Satan, the expelled one.’”

Reference: Qur'an, Surah Ali 'Imran, 3:36.

This verse illustrates that a child may be named immediately after birth.

### Naming the child on the seventh day

Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Every child is held in pledge by their aqiqah. It is sacrificed on their behalf on the seventh day, the child's hair is shaved, and the child is named.”

Reference: Sunan Abi Dawud, Jamiʿ al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Nasa'i and Sunan Ibn Majah; related narrations are also found in Musnad Ahmad.

Therefore, the evidence indicates that a child may be named shortly after birth or on the seventh day. Scholars have discussed the different narrations concerning naming on the day of birth and on the seventh day.

### Conclusion

Let us choose names that Allah loves and that carry beautiful and appropriate meanings.

When naming our children, we should:

* Choose names with good meanings.

* Prefer names such as Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman, and names of the Prophets and righteous people.

* Avoid names that contain shirk, inappropriate meanings or claims to attributes exclusive to Allah.

* Change a name when its meaning is genuinely objectionable.

* Avoid believing that a name itself determines a child's character, success or destiny.

* Name the child after birth or on the seventh day, according to the established Islamic guidance.

May Allah bless our children, grant them righteous character, protect them from evil, and make them among His righteous servants. Ameen.
